Explore Amsterdam

Sometimes called the ‘Venice of the North’, the landscape of Amsterdam is dominated by a grid of lovely canals. Home of the Royal Family and many public institutions (though not the parliament), it is the centre of Dutch culture. It has a reputation for being liberal and friendly, with many popular bars and clubs as well as the famous red light district.

At the heart of Amsterdam is Dam Square, the entrypoint to the Royal Palace, a regal hall now shared by the government and Royal Family for state functions. Nearby is the floating flower market on the Singel Canal, one of the only of its kind in the world. To see how the well-heeled of Amsterdam live, head to The Jordaan. Once a working class district, the streets are now sprinkled with upmarket art galleries, boutiques and north European dining. It is also home to the excellent and educational Anne Frank House. Those who wish to can explore De Wallen, the Red Light District, a hedonistic few blocks of tiny shopfronts and cannabis bars. To the south of the city centre lies Museumplein, a large square bordered by three institutions of precious Dutch art - the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and the airy, modern Van Gogh Museum.
